“Being the avid learner that I have always been, acquiring a terminal degree has been my ultimate educational goal. This doctor of education degree will validate all the knowledge, skills, and experiences I have acquired in various settings and will strengthen my leadership capacity. It will also assist me to be a role model to nurses and encourage them to be lifelong learners, influencing their motivation to participate in continuous professional development …The dual core undertaken in this doctoral program, organizational leadership and higher education, is of particular relevance to my long term plans, as not only will I continue to provide informed and effective leadership to the nursing profession in Belize, but in the next few years I will be able to contribute to the formation of nurses as I return to the classroom to teach nursing students at the University of Belize. Thanks to Nova Southeastern University for making the program accessible and affordable; to the Government of Belize for providing study leave and financial support; to family, friends, and coworkers for their understanding and support"
Gwen Nunez-Gonzales
“For my 1 part, I will be doing research on the intercultural bi lingual education program. I am very passionate about using our culture and our language, it doesn’t matter it doesn’t have to be Garifuna but which ever to stimulate learning because that is the natural environment that people are in. so I will be doing my dissertation on that and hopefully I will be working at the Gulisi Community Primary School to do that. When I am through I am seriously considering writing books either researching topics from our perspective because I have read a lot of literature about other people’s perspective of us as Garifuna, as Belizeans, our culture and our language so it is high time that we begin to write so that people can understand our perspective so that’s my goal in pursuing a doctorate because this program is heavily research based” (Love FM, 2008).
Leroy Almendarez
“Globalization has usurped countries of the world, whether developed or developing and therefore, we must be proactive; where we are not proactive, then our reactions must be relevant education. The knowledge gained through research and knowledge delivery by professors has already changed my life because there is a greater awareness of development systems in different parts of the world. My goal is to continue to teach, to assist with the advancement of my organization—which plays a pivotal role in the development of Belize—and to participate in information sharing exercises and fora that will transfer that knowledge through research and symposiums; finding solutions to many everyday problems that exist”(Tun, 2008).
Silvana Uds
“It gives me an opportunity to get the skills to apply my lifelong research to proper testing and evaluation methods and procedures, and thus [I can] contribute to the research in language education that drives policy and classroom implementation. The degree allows me to work in Belize, thus allowing me to pursue it since I would be unable to consider it because at this time in my life, family responsibilities and mortgage, etc. make moving away hard; thus it is affordable. I have a teenager and would not have wanted to disrupt her life anymore, as I am a single parent, thus pursuing it while in Belize is a bonus" (Tun, 2008).
